If your website is like most business websites, you need to make one or
more of the following four fixes:
1) Highlight the benefits your customer will receive when they purchase
from you. Don't take it personally, but most potential customers don't care
about the history of your company, what your corporate headquarters looks
like, or how pretty you are. They want to know "What can you do for me?"
Tell them plainly and thoroughly right from the start of your page.
2) Offer them something of value for their contact information. Do you have
some information your ideal clients would be interested in, that you can
give them via email for free? Tips, Top Ten List, advice related to your
product line? Once you have their email with permission to contact them, it
doesn't matter if they come back to your website: You can contact them. (By
the way, this is how I got your contact info...)
3) Put your keywords in your Title Tag. What is the most likely phrase one
of your potential customers will search for online? Make sure it is in your
title tag! This is the most imporant factor on your webpage to help Google
and other search engines know what you are about. Unless you are a well
known national or international brand, your company name is NOT what your
customers are looking for. Yet this is what many businesses have as their
title tag.
4) Install tracking such as Google Analytics on your web page. This allows
you to see how people end up on your page, how long they stay there, and
gives you ideas on how to better position your company for their business.
There you have it: Four fixes you likely need to make on your business
website!
